Overview of the 4 dialects
Lesson 1 of 7≈ 10 min
One language, four varieties
Shikomori comes in four island varieties — one per island of the archipelago. You've crossed paths with them throughout this course; time to put them on a mental map and understand how they group.
Good news upfront: mutual intelligibility is near-immediate across the four. A Mahorais and a Ngazidja understand each other without difficulty. Differences are mostly phonetic and lexical, not grammatical. The noun-class system, conjugation, demonstratives: everything is shared.
The 4 dialects at a glance
| Dialect | Island | Speakers (approx.) | Main feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| shiNgazidja (ng) | Grande Comore | ~300 000 | Basis of the official norm. Preserves long vowels, dr, dz, pv. |
| shiNdzuani (nz) | Anjouan | ~300 000 | Very close to shimaoré. Uses tr and ntr. |
| shiMwali (mw) | Mohéli | ~50 000 | Least documented. Intermediate. |
| shiMaore (ma) | Mayotte | ~150 000 | Best-documented in France. Uses z (instead of dz). |
The word for « person » in the 4 dialects
- mndru (Ng)
- muntru (Nz)
- muntru (Mw)
- mutru (Ma)
The two blocs
The 4 dialects group into two geographic and linguistic blocs:
- Western bloc: shingazidja + shimwali (Grande Comore + Mohéli)
- Eastern bloc: shindzuani + shimaore (Anjouan + Mayotte)
Intelligibility is total within a bloc, good across blocs with a bit of adaptation.
These blocs have a historical base: Anjouan and Mayotte are geographically close and shared intense trade and migration for centuries. Same for Grande Comore and Mohéli. Phonetic evolutions spread by contact, producing today's situation.
Which dialect to « learn »?
Fair question, no universal answer. It depends on your goal:
- shiMaore is the best-documented in France (CASNAV textbooks, Mayotte resources). If you live in mainland France and can reach the Mahorais diaspora, it's probably the most practical.
- shiNgazidja is the basis of the 2019 official norm (Comorian decree). If you read formal texts or poetry published in Moroni, this is the dominant dialect.
- shiNdzuani is very close to shimaoré (eastern bloc) — learning one is almost learning the other.
- shiMwali is the least documented; choose it if you have a personal tie to Mohéli.
Ideally: master the cross-dialect correspondences (the next 7 lessons), and you'll be a pan-Comorian speaker.
Practice
Which dialect forms the basis of the 2019 official norm?
It's ___.
The western bloc groups…
…shingazidja + ___.
Mini-quiz
shiMaore is spoken on the island of…
…___.
On to the correspondences
The next 6 lessons (5.2 to 5.7) describe the systematic correspondence rules between dialects. Once mastered, you'll switch mechanically from one variety to another — that's pan-Comorian.
